Ghost Town Wines

We’re building something simple and honest.

A few years ago we bought a small piece of land in the old ghost town of Winona, Washington. Quiet hills, a stretch of the Palouse River, and a place that once had nearly a thousand people. Current population: 20. Well, 22 now that my wife and I moved in.

We didn’t set out to start a wine brand or a vineyard. We just liked the land and the quiet. We were planning to retire here. But the land needed to be cleared, and along the way we kept thinking about what to do with it.

We’re in the middle of wheat country — Whitman County is the largest wheat-producing county in the United States. But our few acres isn’t big enough for a wheat grower. So, we tested the soil, talked with people in Walla Walla, and after a couple of years (and a wildfire), we planted a vineyard.

While those vines grow, we’re doing something practical: finding good wine, bottling it carefully, and putting it out under the Ghost Town Wines name.

A lot of our friends were excited about us making wine, but it’s still a few years out. They all said the same things — they wanted good wine, fair prices, no gimmicks, and none of the snobbery. So we decided to start now.

We’re not trying to be fancy or exclusive. We’re not chasing scores or prestige.

Every bottle is numbered. Some get signed. We’re keeping things small enough that it still feels personal.

Ghost Town Wines is the beginning. The vines in Winona are the longer story. Until they’re ready, this is about starting a relationship with you.
